History of the Twin Dolphin

The Twin Dolphin development comprising Maravilla and Montage Los Cabos is named in honor of the former Hotel Twin Dolphin, one of the first luxury hotels in all of Los Cabos. Before the Transpeninsular Highway existed, such Hollywood luminaries as John Wayne and Bing Crosby landed on a small airstrip here to enjoy holidays in quiet Cabo. Today, several of the original Hotel Twin Dolphin details remain in homage to the historic resort and the spirit of hospitality.

The Rich History Of The Twin Dolphin

Opened in 1977 by Texas oilman David J. Halliburton Sr., the Hotel Twin Dolphin was an exclusive 50-room resort featuring earth-red Mexican tile floors, its guest quarters and dining room open to the sea.

Legend has it that David Sr., son of Halliburton company founder Erle Palmer Halliburton, enjoyed fishing in Los Cabos with friends including Dean Martin, John Wayne and Baron Hilton, and built the hotel partly so their wives would make the trip instead of complaining about the frequent Mexican fishing excursions.

The hotel’s name, according to a 2004 New York Times article, was inspired by a comment made in 1938 by Erle Halliburton when his yacht broke down near the tip of Baja. While waiting for it to be repaired, David Sr. spent so much time swimming in the Sea of Cortez that his father is said to have remarked, “The kid’s the twin of a dolphin,” prompting the crew to begin calling the boy Twin Dolphin. Years later, Halliburton Sr. would own a yacht dubbed the Twin Dolphin.

Though the hotel was upscale, Halliburton insisted that the rooms have no televisions or telephones and over the years it developed something of a reputation as a hideaway for celebrity visitors. After Halliburton Sr. died in 1997, his son David Jr. took over the hotel. It eventually closed in 2006.

Honoring The Legacy

Today, Maravilla Los Cabos sits on the site of the former hotel and two distinctive architectural features pay homage to its memory. The original Hotel Twin Dolphin stairs have been preserved and are still in use today, leading Maravilla residents from The Club right onto Viudas Beach.

Maravilla has also erected a beautiful Twin Dolphin sculpture and fountain centerpiece that welcomes residents and symbolizes the community’s spirit and essence, evoking themes of harmony and joy.

Hotel Twin Dolphin founder David Halliburton Sr. had a reputation as an ecologist and today the community that stands on the site is being thoughtfully developed to preserve and celebrate the natural beauty of the desert landscape. In addition, Santa Maria Bay Beach was recently awarded the international Blue Flag certification signifying the highest environmental and water quality standards.

Overall Master Plan

Situated on the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico overlooking Santa Maria Bay and the Sea of Cortez, Twin Dolphin is a 1,400-acre master-planned community being developed by Ohana Real Estate Investors.

“Honoring the natural environment has been important to us every step of the way,” said Alex Hill, executive vice president of development, Ohana Real Estate Investors. “We have made thoughtful choices at each turn, such as native landscaping that includes saving and replanting over 40,000 plants, a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis desalination plant, building design that conserves energy and highlights indoor-outdoor experiences, and plans for developing an eco-friendly golf course.”

The 18-hole Fred Couples Signature Golf Course, co-designed by the 1992 Masters champion and 2013 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee to feature dramatic views of the Sea of Cortez, is scheduled to open in 2018.
